DAY 1: MARRAKECH - IMLIL – AROUMD - ACHAYN –
MARRAKECH:
Departure by car from Marrakech around 9 in the morning for 2hour drive south up
the Moulay Brahim Gorges, Asni weekly market every saturday then to Imlil
(1740m), set in the upper level foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains, a
main trailhead with streams and paths branching out in all directions. Here we
shall leave our vehicle to take a welcome glass of mint tea in the village and
meet your local guide prior to setting out for some 4km excursion. towards the
south to the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843m), passing the hamlets of
ait souka, Targa, and Imoula, up and down the stark slopes, the jagged Western
High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif before us - Jbels Aguelzim (3547m),
Aksouâl (3847m) and the Adrar Adj (3122m) watching us all the way.
We shall stop at Aroumd to visit this rather singular village in the Assif Aït
Mizane Valley, built seemingly house upon house on a large moraine spur,
overlooking ancient irrigated terraced fields of barley, corn and vegetables and
always surrounded by almond and walnut trees. We thence carry on for another
Half an Hour to get to our lunch wish will be served among a berber familly in
the village of achayn prior to setting off back down the other side of the
valley back to Imlil and our return trip to Marrakech.
Day 2 Marrakech --IMLIL - AROUMD - SIDI CHAMHAROUCH - IMLIL--Marrakech.
We set off today towards the southwest skirting the Berber town of Imlil
(1740m), known as Morocco ’s ‘Little Chamonix’, set, as we are, in the upper
level foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains of the Toubkal National
Park. With streams and paths branching out in all directions, we traverse the
Tamatert Valley until we reach the hamlet of Achelm to strike out for some 4km
towards the south towards the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843m), passing
the hamlets of Taourirt, Targa, and Imoula, up and down the stark slopes, the
jagged Western High Atlas peaks of the Jbel Toubkal Massif - at 4167m the
highest peak in North Africa - before us, with her awe-inspiring sister peaks
the Jbels Aguelzim (3547m), Aksouâl (3847m) and the Adrar Adj (3122m) watching
us all the way.
We shall stop at Aroumd to visit this rather singular village in the Assif Aït
Mizane Valley , built see
mingly
house upon house on a large moraine spur overlooking ancient irrigated terraced
fields of barley, corn and vegetables and always surrounded by almond and walnut
trees. We thence carry on for another 8km.to the equally-quaint village of Sidi
Chamharouch, a Berber village set beside a waterfall and small stream, again
with its pisé homes seemingly built somewhat chaotically one into another. This
village is a place of pilgrimage for devout Moslems and it is where there is a
marabout shrine – forbidden to non-Moslems - said to be a relic of a pre-Islamic
religious and naturalist cult.
We take a break for a picnic, within full view of Jbel Toubkal, prior to setting
off back down the other side of the valley at a gentle pace back to the
delightful Douar ACHAYN .
Toubkal ascent trek : 2 days/1 night or 2 nights : Departure from Imlil or Marrakech
Day 1. Drive from Marrakech to Imlil and trek to Toubkal Refuge via Aremd & the
Mizane Valley
Leaving the city behind we drive south today, towards the craggy peaks and
plunging valleys of the Toubkal Massif. Crossing the Haouz Plain we pass through
the tiny town of Asni, from where our road begins to climb towards the foothills
of the Massif. Below us the valley of the Oued Rhirhaia stretches out into the
distance and small villages cling to the sides of the steep hills as we meander
our way towards the village of Imlil. Here we leave our vehicle and, in the
company of our mountain guide, begin our trek, heading along the Mizane Valley,
first towards the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch.
Built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley floor, Aremd is the largest
village in the valley and provides an interesting mix of traditional terraced
farming, gites and streets that seem to be permanently gridlocked by goats and
cattle. For generations the local Berber villagers have worked these lands,
producing corn, potatoes and walnuts from the harsh landscape. Continuing east
and crossing the flood plain our route takes us along mule tracks and up into
the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river we eventually come to
the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims
alike (although only Muslims are allowed to cross the stone bridge to visit the
marabout shrine itself). The village sits besides a small waterfall, a jumbled
cluster of houses that seem to melt together into an anarchic mass. From here
the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the
snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), our stop for the night. Approx 4-5hrs
walking.
Day 2. Trek to summit of Jebel Toubkal(4165m); return to Imlil
Early this morning we make our attempt on the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the
highest peak in Northern Africa. Our route takes us up the south cirque,
crossing the stream above the refuge and then heading across one of the
mountains numerous scree fields, where we will have to negotiable a seemingly
endless carpet of boulders and rocks. The walking is relatively straightforward,
but the scree and the altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts,
however, the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. Cresting
the ridgeline we find ourselves on the plateau, from where it is a short walk to
the summit and the vistas out across the surrounding landscape are quite
breathtaking. From here there are unrestricted views in every direction, from
the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the
Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Pliny, the great Roman scholar, once described the
High Atlas Mountains as "the most fabulous mountains in all of Africa" and from
our vantage point high above the valley it is easy to understand why. Retracing
our steps we then return down the mountain and head back towards Imlil where we
will spend the night amongst the Berbers, staying in a traditional village
house.
N.B : Its possible to spend the first night in Imlil for the ones who wants to acclimatize.

Toubkal circle Trek
Day 1: Marrakech-Imlil-Tacheddirt
We leave Marrakech after breakfast and drive to Imlil via Asni. Imlil is the
principal trailhead for walkers, and a busy market town. There is a constant
movement of people coming down from the mountains, and an equal supply of
activity from those about to embark on their adventure. We meet our mule team
and once all our gear is loaded we begin walking along the valley towards
Tacheddirt, some 8kms beyond Imlil. Soon the trail begins to rise as we climb up
to the pass at Tizi n'Tamatert (2279m). We then descend to the pretty village of
Ouaneskra and continue, for a further half-hour or so, to Tacheddirt (3000m),
where we generally camp near the river.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 2: Tacheddirt-Azib Likemt
Crossing the valley we begin a long, slow ascent to the pass at Tizi Likemt
(3555m). The going is quite tough as there is a considerable amount of loose
scree on the ground. At the top we enjoy our first fine view of the Toubkal
massif before a long downhill descent to the village of Azib Likemt, where we
camp for the night.
Day 3: Azib Likemt-Tizi n'Ourai-Amsouzert
This long, but relatively easy, day takes us through a variety of contrasting
landscapes. From Tizi n’Ououraine (3120m) we enjoy further views of the Toubkal
massif, including the summit, the east face and the Ifni Dome (3876m). The trail
leads on towards Amsouzert, one of the most striking villages in the region,
where we spend the night – dormitory-style - in a simple village Gite.
Day 4: Amsouzert-Ifni Lake
West of Amsouzert are several small villages, which we explore as we make our
way towards Ifni Lake, the only lake in the massif. It is a memorable sight,
surrounded by rocky mountains and giant heaps of rubble, and is unusually deep.
We expect to arrive by lunchtime and spend the afternoon relaxing at the shore.
We camp tonight in this area.
Day 5: Ifni Lake-Nelter Hut
By now we should be both fit and acclimatised, and ready to tackle the hardest
day of the trek. We make our way along a steep path that leads up a seemingly
endless scree slope. At length we reach the pass at Tizi n'Ouanoums (3664m), a
narrow ledge between two shafts of rock. From here it is a long zigzag descent
to Nelter Hut, a mountain refuge where we spend the night (or alternatively camp
outside).
Day 6: Mt. Toubkal Summit- Imlil
We leave before dawn, following a well-worn route to the summit. If conditions
are good it should take no more than 2-3 hours to reach the summit, where we
enjoy expansive views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond.
Returning to base, we then descend fairly rapidly to the villages of Sidi
Chamharouch and Aremd, before following the Mizane River, along a well-forested
trail, to the trailhead at Imlil.
Day 7: drive back to Marrakech
